BoomBoys have secured a place in The International 2026 playoffs after defeating Aurora Gaming 2-0 in the Elimination Round on August 16. The result ended Aurora’s run in Shanghai and delivered one of the most striking reversals of the tournament so far.

What made the elimination particularly dramatic was the history between the two teams. Aurora had already beaten BoomBoys 2-0 during the group stage and later selected them as their opponent for the decisive elimination series. The rematch, however, produced the exact opposite result. BoomBoys adapted, controlled both maps and ensured that Aurora would not reach the final eight.

Aurora’s Choice Turns Into a Costly TI 2026 Mistake

Aurora entered the match with reasons to feel confident. Their earlier victory over BoomBoys had been convincing, while the latter finished the Swiss-style stage with a 2-3 series record and arrived in the Elimination Round under pressure.

The situation changed quickly once the rematch started. BoomBoys looked far more prepared for Aurora’s approach and successfully converted their early advantages rather than allowing the series to develop into the kind of chaotic late-game Dota that can erase a lead in minutes.

The series produced several important consequences:

  • BoomBoys completed a 2-0 sweep despite losing 0-2 to Aurora earlier in the tournament.
  • Aurora were eliminated before the top-eight stage of The International 2026.
  • BoomBoys joined the final playoff field alongside TEAM VISION, Nigma Galaxy, Team Liquid, Team Falcons, Team Spirit, Iron Wing and Team Yandex.
  • The victory gave BoomBoys another opportunity to chase their first Aegis of Champions in Shanghai.

One of the key moments in the series came as BoomBoys began building a substantial economic advantage around Kiritych. His farm helped the team gain control of the map and gave Aurora fewer opportunities to force favorable engagements. Once BoomBoys were able to pressure high ground, Aurora struggled to find a clean way back into the game.

TEAM VISION Now Stand Between BoomBoys and a Deeper TI Run

Reaching the playoffs does not make the road any easier. BoomBoys are set to meet TEAM VISION in the upper-bracket quarterfinals when the main event begins on August 20 at the SPD Bank Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai.

TEAM VISION were among the strongest performers of the opening stage, finishing with four series victories and securing direct passage into the playoff bracket. BoomBoys, by comparison, had to survive an elimination match just to keep their tournament alive.

That contrast gives the upcoming series an interesting storyline. TEAM VISION arrive with consistency, while BoomBoys have already demonstrated that their group-stage results do not necessarily predict what they can produce in a high-pressure elimination match.

For Aurora, the defeat will be especially difficult to forget. Choosing an opponent they had already beaten appeared logical on paper, but The International once again showed how quickly preparation, drafts and momentum can change a matchup. For BoomBoys, the 2-0 victory has transformed a shaky group stage into a top-eight finish — with the possibility of much more still ahead.
