House Avernus guards a crack in the world's bones. Through that fissure, called the Font, seeps a black mist that has gifted every newborn of the line with a link to the land's mystic hum. Babies are dipped in the vapor, and they grow up trained for war, convinced they defend the family's proud customs. But the real duty is the Font itself, and the mist's intentions remain murky. Abaddon's baptism went wrong. Onlookers swore they saw comprehension flare in his infant eyes, and the priests muttered nervously. Raised like any scion, he was expected to pick up a blade and lead the army when needed. Instead, he sat by the fissure, breathing the fumes until his spirit fused with whatever pulses beneath the house. His kin grumbled that he shirked his duties. Then he rode to battle, and every complaint died. The mist had made him a master of life and death beyond any lord the family had ever produced.
