Valve has restored the normal Immortal Draft restrictions after an update briefly exposed the mode to ranked players at every level. The problem appeared alongside Dota 2’s autumn seasonal event, and players quickly noticed that a system normally reserved for the highest-ranked matches could be entered far more widely. Nothing in the patch notes announced a permanent expansion, and the change was later identified as a bug rather than a redesign of ranked matchmaking.

The unusual access did not last long. Cybersport.ru reported that Valve corrected the problem after roughly 30 minutes, returning Immortal Draft to its previous limits. That timing is the clearest explanation for anyone who saw the option immediately after downloading the update and then found it unavailable. The short window may have looked like an unannounced experiment, but the correction points to a rollout mistake: the familiar eligibility rules are back in place.

Why the rollout caused confusion

Immortal Draft appeared as part of a larger client update, which made the bug easy to mistake for one of the release’s intended features. The autumn event brought seasonal rewards and cosmetic sets for Clockwerk, Treant Protector and Windranger, while the unexpected ranked access arrived at the same time. Those additions were part of the announced release; universal access to Immortal Draft was not. Separating the two explains why the mode disappeared without being described as a balance change or a new matchmaking policy.

There was also a second sign that Valve was treating the rollout as a live problem. Cyber.Sports.ru reported that the update temporarily became unavailable to download after players who had already installed it encountered the Immortal Draft issue. Steam displayed a notice that the download was unavailable for a period. The reports do not establish how many players were affected or how long distribution was paused, but the sequence is clear enough: the update went live, the ranked restriction failed, distribution was interrupted, and the previous limits were restored.

What the fix means for ranked players

The practical outcome is simple. Immortal Draft has not become an all-rank mode, and players should not treat its brief appearance as a preview of a confirmed matchmaking overhaul. Anyone below the usual eligibility threshold who entered during the rollout encountered a temporary error. Valve has not provided a technical post-mortem, so there is no firm basis for linking the bug to another ranked system or for assuming that the company plans to revisit the restriction.

For high-ranked regulars, the quick reversal also means that match formation should again follow the same expectations it did before the seasonal update. The temporary opening did not produce a newly announced queue, a separate rules page or a transition period. Players who only read screenshots from the first minutes of the release may therefore have an outdated picture of the current client. The lasting change is the seasonal content; the wider Immortal Draft access was the part Valve removed.

  • Intended release content included the autumn event, seasonal rewards and three cosmetic sets.
  • Unintended behaviour made Immortal Draft available across all ranked levels until Valve applied the correction.
Summary of Valve restoring Immortal Draft restrictions
Stage What players saw
Immediately after the update Immortal Draft could be accessed in ranked matches at every rank.
After Valve’s response The former eligibility restrictions were restored; Cybersport.ru put the fix at about 30 minutes after release.

For now, the safest reading is the least dramatic one: a release bug temporarily opened a restricted mode and Valve closed it again. The autumn event remains available, but Immortal Draft is operating under the rules players knew before the update. Anyone returning to ranked play after the fix should see the restored restriction, not the brief all-rank access captured during rollout.
