Dota 2 pings let a team share a location without stopping to type. A normal ping can draw attention to a rune, tower or moving enemy. A danger ping asks allies to move away or prepare for an attack. Contextual pings can also report an item, ability, health value or missing hero.
The basic controls are simple, but the meaning depends on timing. One accurate signal before a fight is useful. Several repeated signals can hide other information and make the team react more slowly. This guide explains the standard inputs and a calm way to use them.
Place a normal ping on the ground or minimap
Hold Alt and press the left mouse button on the ground or minimap. Allies hear a signal and see an exclamation mark at that position. The same input on an enemy building usually suggests an attack, while a ping on an allied building asks the team to defend it.
A normal ping should point to the exact place that matters. Mark the ramp where an enemy may appear, the rune that needs attention or the tower that the team can reach. A signal in an empty part of the map forces allies to guess what the player means.
Use the danger ping for an immediate warning
Hold Ctrl and Alt, then press the left mouse button on the minimap. This creates a danger signal with a different sound and symbol. Use it when opponents are missing, an area has no vision or an ally is walking toward a likely attack.
The danger signal is strongest before the threat becomes visible. After a fight begins, players already have more urgent information on the screen. A warning two seconds earlier can protect a teammate, while a late warning may only add noise.

Open the ping wheel for a specific message
Hold Alt and keep the left mouse button pressed to open the ping wheel. Move the cursor toward the required message and release the button. The available choices can include retreat, attack, enemy vision, required vision or movement toward a location.
The wheel is useful when a plain sound is too vague. A request for vision near Roshan is different from a call to begin the fight. Learn the position of two or three common messages first. Searching through every option during combat is slower than using one familiar signal.
| Action | Default input | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Normal location ping | Alt + left click | Draw attention to a place or target |
| Danger ping | Ctrl + Alt + left click | Warn allies about immediate risk |
| Ping wheel | Hold Alt + left mouse button | Choose a more specific team message |
| Minimap drawing | Hold Ctrl and drag | Show a short movement route |
Share information from the interface
Alt-click many interface elements to send their current state to team chat. An item ping can show whether the item is ready or on cooldown. An ability ping can report its cooldown or missing mana. A health or mana bar ping shares the current value without requiring a typed message.
Alt-clicking an enemy portrait at the top of the screen can report that the hero is missing. A related input can report that the hero has returned. These messages work best when they support visible map information instead of replacing it.
Draw a short route on the minimap
Hold Ctrl and drag the left mouse button across the minimap to draw a temporary line. A short arrow can show an intended route around a warded area or the direction of a team movement. Keep the drawing simple so that it remains readable.
Do not cover the minimap with circles or long repeated lines. The drawing disappears, but it can block unit icons at an important moment. One clear route and one destination ping usually communicate the complete plan.

Build a useful communication habit
Connect every signal with the information available to teammates. Ping the missing hero, then mark the lane or jungle entrance where that hero may arrive. If an important spell is unavailable, ping its cooldown before the team commits to an objective.
Avoid using pings to blame a teammate after an error. That message cannot change the previous action and may distract the next decision. Signals are most valuable when they describe a threat, a resource or a plan that still matters.
Test the inputs in a bot match if a custom keyboard layout uses Alt or Ctrl for items. Confirm that the normal ping, danger ping and wheel do not conflict with those bindings. A small adjustment before matchmaking prevents accidental signals during a fight.
