Dota 2 is designed around a free camera, but the client can quickly center the view on the selected hero. This helps after a teleport, a minimap check or a sudden fight. A permanent lock is usually less useful because players still need to inspect other lanes.
Move the camera away, press Select Hero and confirm that the view returns immediately.
Use the current method
Open Settings and confirm the Select Hero hotkey. Press it once to select the hero and center the camera.
Use the available hold or follow behavior for the Select Hero key if the current client offers it. Release the key when you need free movement.
Set control groups for summons separately. The main hero key should always return selection and view to the hero.
Check that the change worked
Test the key after selecting a courier or controlled unit. It should recover the hero without clicking the portrait.
Practice alternating between the hero, minimap and team fight. Fast recentering is more useful than watching only the hero model.

Avoid common problems
Do not bind Select Hero to a key already used by an item or ability. Conflicting binds can make the command seem unreliable.
A locked view reduces map awareness and can hide incoming enemies. Use it for short moments rather than the entire match.
Camera behavior may feel different in replays and spectator mode. Test the binding in a live practice lobby.
Final check before a normal match
Repeat the method once in a fresh private lobby. Confirm the visible result, then return every temporary setting to its normal value. This short check prevents a practice command or experimental control from affecting the next ordinary game.
Game menus and internal commands can change after an update. When the current client does not show an option described here, use the visible replacement instead of forcing an old file or command. The saved post remains a draft so an editor can confirm the current interface before publication.
