How to Turn Auto Attack On or Off in Dota 2

Choose the correct Dota 2 auto-attack mode and test how it behaves after movement, spells and Stop commands.

Auto attack controls whether a selected unit begins attacking without a direct attack order. The best choice depends on the hero and the player’s control habits. It does not replace last-hit timing or target selection.

Enter Demo Hero and stand near enemy creeps without issuing an attack. Observe the first response under each mode.

Use the current method

Open Settings and find Auto Attack in the advanced game options. Choose Never, Standard or Always according to the behavior you want.

Use Never when you want every attack to follow a direct command. Standard allows normal automatic reactions after common orders, while Always is more aggressive.

Check the separate behavior for summoned units if the client provides it. A hero and controlled units do not always need the same setting.

Check that the change worked

Cast a spell, move and press Stop in separate tests. Confirm whether the hero resumes attacking after each action.

Repeat the test with a summon or illusion. Their selection and orders can expose a setting that was not obvious on the main hero.

Avoid common problems

Auto attack does not choose the best target. It can reveal a hidden position or damage the wrong creep.

The Stop and Hold Position commands have different uses. Bind both before testing lane control.

A copied configuration may restore an older mode. Recheck the visible menu after importing settings.

Final check before a normal match

Repeat the method once in a fresh private lobby. Confirm the visible result, then return every temporary setting to its normal value. This short check prevents a practice command or experimental control from affecting the next ordinary game.

Game menus and internal commands can change after an update. When the current client does not show an option described here, use the visible replacement instead of forcing an old file or command. The saved post remains a draft so an editor can confirm the current interface before publication.
