Terrains change the appearance of the Dota map without changing its competitive rules. They are cosmetic loadout items. Availability depends on what the account owns and whether the item remains supported by the current client.
The selected terrain should be marked as equipped in the Armory. A new match should load its map textures.
Use the current method
Open the Armory and use the world or terrain filter. Select an owned terrain and choose Equip.
Start Demo Hero or a private lobby to inspect the map. Check lanes, river edges and neutral camps before entering matchmaking.
Return to the default terrain from the same loadout area when visibility is worse or the custom map has a temporary visual problem.
Check that the change worked
Verify the game files through Steam if the map shows missing textures. Let the download complete before testing again.
Check weather and terrain separately. Combining several world cosmetics can make it harder to identify which item caused a visual issue.

Avoid common problems
Not every old terrain can be purchased or traded today. Ownership rules differ between cosmetic releases.
A terrain does not change paths, camp boxes or ability ranges. Use the standard gameplay geometry even when the art looks different.
Avoid replacing map files manually. Unsupported file changes can break when Dota 2 updates.
Final check before a normal match
Repeat the method once in a fresh private lobby. Confirm the visible result, then return every temporary setting to its normal value. This short check prevents a practice command or experimental control from affecting the next ordinary game.
Game menus and internal commands can change after an update. When the current client does not show an option described here, use the visible replacement instead of forcing an old file or command. The saved post remains a draft so an editor can confirm the current interface before publication.
